Built on a curve of the River Garonne, Bordeaux has been a majot port since pre-Roman times. Divided into two parts: the right bank to the East and left bank in the West, the left bank is the more developed. The fifth largest town in France, Bordeaux's main themes are industrial and maritime based around an 18th century centre.
Bordeaux is the world's wine capital, with 117,000 hectares of vineyards. After Marseille, Bordeaux is the oldest trading port in France - much of its prosperity coming from the sale of wine to England. Producing over 44 million cases of wine per year, (700 million bottles), Bordeaux produces large quantities of everyday wine as well as the most expensive ones.
Bordeaux offers more than its renowned alcoholic beverages! The architecture is fascinating with much of central Bordeaux consisting of grand streets and 18th century mansions. Cathedrale St Andre is a focal point, with many good museums in the surrounding locality.
