Sete

A pleasant place to visit with a 12km long beach

There are traces to Man being in Sete back in the Bronze Age but the woodland island remained unihabited. In the Middle Ages, the various regional authorities fought for possession of the rock until Louise XIV decided to build a new port on the Languedoc coast.

A canal was dug out to the east of the hill to link the port to the Etang de Thau and the main communication routes, the Canal du Midi and the river Rhone. The port was opened in 1669. It grew with the influx of people from nearby regions and from abroad, particularly Italy.

The port began to specialise in the wine trade with Algeria. In 1928, the town's name changed from Cette to Sete. The second World War left 80% of the port in ruins and it was rebuilt to a different design.

The sea around Sete has offered up many of its treasures, which the local inhabitants have used in their own recipes. You will find a huge range of unique Mediterranean dishes here, based on seafood, shellfish, fish, local vegetables, herbs and spices.
