Set around the beautiful bay of Naples, the compact centre of Naples is filled with ancient churches convents and monasteries Naples.
The third-largest city in Italy and densely populated, Naples can be chaotic and noisy although many of the gems of the city, in its art and architecture can be found here.
Visit the city’s grand cathedral – the Duomo. Originally dating from 1272, it has undergone numerous alterations. The Duomo houses relics of San Gennaro, patron saint of Naples – the ornate Cappella San Gennaro holds his head within a silver bust.
The Cappella Sansevero is a small 16th century chapel – the burial sepulcher of the Princes of Sangro di Sensevero.
North of the Spaccanapoli district you must pay a visit the Museo Archeologico Nazionale. Boasting one of the most comprehensive collections of Graeco-Roman artifacts in the world, the Museum started life in the 1500s as the home of the royal cavalry. The splendid mosaic from the House of the Faun in Pompeii can be found here, depicting the victory of Alexander the Great over the Persian emperor, Darious III. The Museum also houses the Borgia collection of Etruscan and Egyptian relics.
Lying in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, Naples hosts some of the finest Renaissance art treasures. Capodimonte admirers must take a trip to the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte, and 18th century royal palace housing an excellent display.
Castel Sant’Elmo offers spectacular views out over the bay and the city itself.
Finish you visit with a stroll in the Via Floridiana. This public park spills down from the Vomero to Mergelina.
Naples greatest invention is still in great supply. The pizza was invented in the 18th century and is still one of the favourite dishes. Seafood is also excellent here.
