Olbia is the most important town in the Gallura region of Sardinia and is where most visitors to the island arrive.
The town was founded between the 4th and 6th centuries BC by the Carthaginians, followed soon after by the Romans.
There are still remains from this period including an aqueduct and Roman bath. many artifacts have been excavated and are now on display at the Cagliari Museum.
The old city centre has beautiful churches, San Paulo and San Simplicio, built in the 9th century.
The modern Olbia is a pleasant and prosperous town, which sits in a wide natural inlet. Away from Olbia the scenery is dramatic, especially the coast road 'Costa Smeralda' where views are fantastic. The beaches in this area of Sardinia are also well worth a visit.
