For an excellent beach in Tavira, Praia da Ilha de Tavira (often locally referred to as Praia das Cascas) is a magnet for watersports enthusiasts.
A short boat trip (taking 10 minutes) from Tavira, departing from the jetty at Quatro Aguas -just by the old market in the centre of Tavira, this elongated sandbar beach is a popular attraction and has a reserved section for naturists.
There are two sides to this island, the quiet side with a relaxed sandy beach looking out over the still water between the island and the mainland and a few minutes walk across the island you will come across a much larger beach which faces out to sea.
Photo portfolio: http://picasaweb.google.com/PortuGolf The local Camara (town council) organises a wide varirty of activities entertainments during the year -- street theatre and music; book fairs, antiques fairs; arts & crafts fairs; a film festival; visiting dance, theatre and music groups, etc. The nearby beaches of Ilha da Tavira offer 13km of fine white strand -- and a remote nudist beach. The Ria Formosa nature park surrounds Tavira. The Algarvean hills, while not officially a nature park, offer a further opportunity to commune with nature -- or just to wander. The Guadiana Valley (the border between Spain and Portugal) with its many walled towns offers some excellent sightseeing -- you can also take a river cruise to see the towns. Tavira itself has many Moorish remains -- and, of course, a Roman Bridge still in everyday use. Golf courses abound, there are five within 5 to 15 mins drive. The nearby Benamor course (3 miles) offers an excellent venue for lunch while the Quinta da Cima course is rated by those in the know as one of the best course in Portugal (Nš 1 in Portugal according to the authorative 2004 PEUGEOT Guide). While there is a marked absence in Tavira of the disco bars which abound on the western side of the Algarve, there are two discos in town which are highly regarded by younger visitors -- they typically open at about midnight and close about six am! And there is always the sun and the water sports if you run out of things to do! Photo portfolio: http://picasaweb.google.com/PortuGolf For more, see www.portugolf.co.uk.

Tavira remains an active fishing port and is justifiably famous for its many and inexpensive fish restaurants. The local Camara (town council) organises a wide variety of activities and entertainments during the year -- street theatre and music; book fairs, antiques fairs; arts & crafts fairs; a film festival; visiting dance, theatre and music groups, etc. The nearby beaches of Ilha da Tavira offer 13km of fine white strand -- and a remote nudist beach. The Guadiana Valley (the border between Spain and Portugal) with its many walled towns offers some excellent sightseeing -- you can also take a river cruise to see the towns. Tavira itself has many Moorish and Crusader remains -- and, of course, a Roman Bridge still in everyday use. Golf courses abound, there are three within 10 mins drive: Benamor, Quinta da Cima (once rated the best course in Portugal by the authorative 2004 PEUGEOT Guide) and Quinat da Ria -- all offer excellent lunch. Drive 20 to 25 mins and you have Quinta Vale, Monte Ria and Castro Marim. Almost all of the ALgarve's well known course can be reached within one hour, as well as several magnificent courses just over the border in Spain (e.g., Islantilla, Isla da Canela, etc). And there is always the sun and the water sports if you run out of things to do! Photos see http://picasaweb.google.com/PortuVilla
