Heulva
Heulva is a likeable and bustling place with an interesting mix of old and new architecture
The provincial capital of the Province of Heulva is a port located on the mouth of the Odiel and Tinto estuary. Industry dominates the approach to the city, but Huelva is one of the least visited regions in Andalucia, and has many unique places to discover and explore.
Pronounced ‘wel-vah’, Heulva tends to be only passed through by travellers on the way to or from neighbouring Portugal but the city offers something for everyone. It contains most of the Parque Nacional de Donana, whose famous wetlands are a bird habitat of huge national importance. Here is one of Europe's last remaining habitats for the endangered lynx and the rare Spanish Imperial Eagle. The park is best visited in winter and spring when it is full of wildfowl. In winter thousands of geese and ducks arrive from the north, while in spring there are many flocks of breeding birds, including herons, spoonbills and storks.
The ‘lugares colombinos’ (Columbus sites), where Columbus planned his 1492 voyage and set sail, will fascinate anyone with an historical interest. These sites include Huelva itself, Moguer, Palos de la Frontera and the Rábida Monastery. Visitors can find the places where Columbus sought the aid of the Fransicans at the monastery of La Rábida. Each year Heulva celebrates the occasion with its Fiestas Colombinas, a week of music, dancing, sport, cultural events and bullfiighting, normally held around the first week of August.
Heulva’s central area is about 1km square, with the bus station at its western edge and the train station at oits southern edge. The tourist information office is at Avenida de Alemania 12, a few steps from the bus station.
