The first resort west of Malaga airport

Torremolinos

Torremolinos, located 7km west of Málaga airport, was the first Costa del Sol resort to be developed back in the early sixties. From a sleepy village it became big, brash colourful and loud and a resort for the young and lively, with two vast expanses of beach dedicated to sun-worshipping and neon-lit street that throng with life.

The main artery of the town is Calle San Miguel, a pedestrian zone packed with shops, bars,pubs, amusement arcades and leads to a flight of steps descending to the beaches of La Carihuels and Bajondillo, divided by a rocky promontory.

Torre de los Molinos, the tower of the windmills, is recorded on a map as early as 1748, when the village was surrounded by 19 flour mills, powered by three streams flowing into the Meditteranean at El Bajondillo beach. This is a popular, picturesque area lined with restaurants and market-style kiosks, selling souvenirs. Down at the bottom is the beach of El Bajondillo.

La Carihuela, the original fishing village that used to serve Malaga, still bears traces of its humble past, with many of the original cottages still in existance. Here, ancient fishermen can be spotted in the morning, grilling sardines on wooden skewers over open fires on the beach. The streets of the quarter have been pedestrianised making a pleasant walk.

Despite its largely transient population, Torremolinos has some 30,000 permanent inhabitants who turn out in style each September for a spectacular 'romeria' in honour of San Miguel, the town's patron saint. A colourful parade of ox-drawn gypsy caravans, beautiful Andalucian horses and flamenco dancers weaves through the streets to the pine forest behind the town for a night of barbecues, paella cooking, fino drinking and dancing.

The Aquapark near the Palacio de Congresos has Europe’s largest water-slide and is a great attraction for children and adult children!
