Vacation rentals and homes, commercial property and residential sales in Andratx
Only 25 km from Palma Andratx is a very attractive place for those wanting a second house in a quiet area.
Andratx is a charming little town that sits amid hillsides covered in almond, orange and olive trees. The town is located slightly inland, the reason being prevention of pirate attacks. You will find Andratx in the south west corner of Mallorca. In common with other towns on the Mallorcan coast, Andratx was built inland from its port to protect it from pirate raids. These days, visitors converge on the port, but Andratx retains a sleepy provincial feel, really only coming alive on market day.
Two buildings dominate the town – the 13th century church of Santa Maria and the 15th century Castell Son Mas, now the town hall. Beyond the castle, in the village of Sa Coma, is the Centro Cultural Andratx which puts on several exhibitions of contemporary art each year. There is a sculpture court and artists’ studios, together with extensive gardens of orange, lemon and fig trees,
The biggest draw is Port Andratx, once a quiet fishing village but now a stylish harbour side town. A stroll along the promenade is recommended – admire the yachts and sit at the waterfront cafes watching the sunset. The nearest beach is across the hills at Camp de Mar.
Dragonera is an islet located to the south east of Majorca. Almost 4km long and 700m wide. It is a continuation of the Tramuntana Mountain Range, separated from the Island of Majorca by a narrow channel, the Freu Channel, at Sant Elm which is about 780m wide. From the harbour town of Sant Elm in the south west of the island, you can set off on a two hour cruise along the coastline which stops off for half an hour on the tiny uninhabited island of Dragonera where you can enjoy a picnic or just rest and take in the beautiful surroundings. Information about boat trips from Sant Elm is available on +34 971 470 449.
Even though the Natural Park is named sa Dragonera, it also includes the islet of Pantaleu, the island Mitjana and els Calafats within its protected area, because of their shared environmental conditions, they are very valuable due to their magnificent state of natural conservation.
Sa Dragonera takes its name from its shape, which is said to resemble a sleeping dragon. During the 16th century the island played host to the notorious Turkish corsair Barbarous (Redbeard), who used it as a base for his attacks on Mallorca and Menorca. Today it is a protected nature reserve.
There is a stark contrast between the two sides of Dragonera, vertical cliffs drop straight into the sea along the west coast, while narrow inlets and coves from a gentler coastline on the east side. Two paved routes are open to visitors: the road that runs the length of the island along the east coast, and the road that climbs west from Cala Llado to the lighthouse at the summit of Puig de Na Popia. Cap de Tramuntana, at the northern tip, offers dramatic views along the north coast of Mallorca – allow about an hour for the return hike from Cala Llado.
