Bellver Castle
A supreme example of Catalan Gothic military architecture combines museums of city history and classical sculpture with panoramic views over Palma bay
Begun in 1300, this Gothic castle stands among pine woods on a hill overlooking the whole of Palma. This castle is so perfectly maintained has been standing for almost 700 years.
Because it is some distance from the centre of town, it can be quite difficult to get to unless you have a car. Alternatively you can take a bus to Placa Gomila and walk up to the castle, a steep twenty minute climb through the woods.
Castell de Bellver is unique among Spanish castles in being entirely round. Three semi-circular buttresses surround a central courtyard, connected by an arch to a free standing keep. The name of the castle means ‘lovely view’ in Catalan, and many visitors come here just to admire the vistas from the terrace. From the rooftop, all of Palma is visible.
Once inside all the rooms lead off Patio de Armas, a central courtyard and parade ground with a well for collecting water. The upper floor contains the chapel dedicated to St Marks, as well as the throne room and the kitchen.
