La Granja
One of Mallorca’s oldest agricultural estates is now a living museum of rural crafts and traditions
Located on the outskirts of a tiny village called Esporles, La Granja is one of the best excursion destinations in Mallorca, visited by thousands of visitors throughout the year. La Granja is a mansion that dates as far back as the 10th century. It covers 3,000 square metres and is surrounded by 20,000 square metres of unique gardens and hectares of pine clad mountains.
The rows of tourist coaches in the car park attest to the popularity of this place, which is heavily promoted as an example of ‘the other Mallorca’. Not everything that you see is authentic and it certainly feels more like a tourist attraction than a working farm, but nevertheless a visit to La Granja gives a genuine insight into traditional rural life.
A visit to La Ganja will take you at least half a day. The mansion is now a huge museum that not only offers static displays of Mall orca’s history but practical demonstrations of age-old crafts and traditions. Twice a week there are horse displays and folk dancing
The tour of the house begins on the first floor, among drawing rooms and halls filled with family portraits. There is a theatre and a children’s room filled with period toys. The ground floor rooms, where the servants worked, contain a wine press, an oil mill and workshops where you might see displays of embroidery, carpentry and basket-making. You may be offered a tasting of empanadas (pasties) and coca (Mallorcan pizza) in the medieval kitchen. Finally go down to the cellar with its prison cells and gruesome torture chamber.
