Lluc Monastery

Mallorca's holiest and loftiest shrine attracts worshippers drawn by an image of the Virgin and the legends with which it is associated; others come for the uplifting mountain location

The Monastery at Lluc is a fine historic building on the edge of the mountains

Lluc Monastery stands in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, surrounded by wooded hills, valleys and, further to the northeast, steep sea cliffs.

Although you could visit the Monastery in under an hour, it is best to allow half a day here. Most people time their visit to take in a service and hear the choirboys singing during morning mass. If you want to soak up the atmosphere of the place, it is better to come late in the day after most of the day trippers have left, or do as many Mallorcan pilgrims do and stay the night - but you must book in advance. If you find no room availability here, there are places nearby where you can place a small tent end spend the night.

The Monastery is a very important place for pilgrims, who arrive to see the "Moreneta" - a dark Madonna, said to fulfil all your wishes.

The Monastery is the focal point of what has become a small village, with restaurants, shops and banks. The large Placa del Pelegrins (Pilgrim Square) leads to the monastery complex, where an avenue of yew trees links to a stone cross at one end with a fountain at the other.

Capocorb Vell

An abandoned village near the south coast gives clues to the Mallorcan lifestyle some 3,000 years ago

Along with Ses Paisses at Arta, the ruins of Capocorb Vell, located seven miles south of Llucmajor are the most significant remains of Mallorca’s Talaioticers. The village was built around 1000BC and inhabited until Roman times. This prehistoric site is of great importance, and lies some 100 metres above sea level. Being one of the first on the island to be excavated and studied, it has been well preserved.

Like other Talaiotic settlements, it was surrounded by walls and dominated by talaiots – conical or pyramid-shaped structures that acted as burial chambers and defensive fortresses.

Here you can see the remains of five talaiots as well as 28 dwellings and livestock pens arranged along a prehistoric street.

An account of archaeological findings is available at the café although the most interesting feature is the large square talaiot on the left as you enter the village. You can climb to the top to see the upper room and a hole in the floor gives way to a narrow spiral staircase which leads to an underground chamber roofed with wild olive trunks.
