Vacation rentals and homes, commercial property and residential sales in Petra
The shrine to one of the greatest Mallorcans of all time can be found in this quiet, rural town, which is blessed with good restaurants.
Apart from a few modern cafes in the shady main square, Petra is much a sleepy little village. Fray Junipero Serra was born here, in the eighteenth century, the founder of California in the U.S. You can visit the house where he was born. There is also a 12th century monastery called the Ermita de Nostra Senyora de Bonany. A plaque on the parish church pays tribute to this ‘explorer, missionary, hero, civilizer born in the light of Spain’.
A street of baked earth houses, clad with bougainvillea, runs from the museum to the San Bernardino convent, where Serra went to school. Ring the bell to be let into the convent which is open daily between 10 – 12.30am and 4 – 5.30pm.
