POLLENSA HOLIDAY RENTALS

Pollensa

The most appealing of all Mallorca's towns set in a narrow valley between two hills, with historic churches, inyteresting museums and a pretty, cafe-lined square

The attractive, sedate resort of Pollensa stretches along a sheltered horseshoe-shaped bay lined with sandy beaches. Built between two hills, this resort has everything including wonderful scenery, beautiful sandy beaches and a laid-back friendly atmosphere.

The sheltered bay is set against the stunning backdrop of the Tramuntana mountain range. There are a number of small natural beaches in the area, as well as the recently extended artificial one, all offering the usual selection of facilities and water sports.

The bay of Port de Pollensa is home to a multitude of luxury yachts, as well as a mixture of colourful local fishing boats which sadly in recent years are now in the minority. Although, the warm shallow waters of the bay do make it especially popular with families with small children.

Most of the action takes place around the Placa Major, which is the central square that springs into life every Sunday morning as host to one of Mallorca’s busiest markets. The lanes around the square are perfect fro an afternoon stroll or a visit to one of the many art galleries and speciality shops.

A stairway consisting of 365 steps, from the town centre climbs to the Calvary chapel and a longer walk for the more energetic, leads to the sanctuary on the summit of Puig de Maria. Port de Pollenca is four miles away from the town of Pollensa.

If visiting during the summer months you will not miss the fiesta season which starts around Pollensa in the middle of July. The Fiesta of the Mare de Déu del Carme in the Puerto de Pollensa on July 16. Along with the usual selection of parades and musical events, this fiesta also often includes a maritime procession.

Formentor

Some of Mallorca’s most beautiful beaches are on Formentor

A heart racing drive, not for the nervous, takes in panoramic views, heavenly beaches and a peek at Mallorca’s original luxury hotel. Drivers who take the 20km journey from Port de Pollensa to Cap de Formentor will be rewarded with views of some of Mallorca’s most dramatic scenery.

After ascending via a series of bends, you will arrive at a large car park at Mirador des Colomer. Climb the steps for views over Es Colomer, a rocky islet named ‘the dovecote’ because of the seabirds it attracts. From here, below you the cliffs drop 200m into the sea. To the left there are views of Cala Boquer, a small cove beneath the jagged limestone ridge of Cavall Bernat.

Formentor beach is popular with day-trippers who arrive by boat from Port de Pollensa. Previously the beach was private and for use by the Hotel Formentor which was opened in 1929 by Argentinian entrepreneur Adan Diehl.

The road from the beach continues to twist and turn all the way to the lighthouse at the end of the cape/ Just before the tunnel, look left for a glimpse of the isolated cove of Cala Figuera, only reached by boat or on foot. The café at the lighthouse has views to the island of Menorca.

Placa Major

Plane trees surround Pollensa's main square which is built on two levels.

Dominating the northern side is the church of Nostra Senyora des Angels, an 18th century replacement of a church established in 1236 soon after the catalan conquest of Mallorca. Alongside the church, the Cafe Espanyol is a popular meeting place. Among the bars lining the east side of the square is Club Pollensa, housed in a 19th century manor house on the corner of Carrer del Mercat.

On Sunday mornings the upper level of Placa Major is taken over by a colourful matket that attracts visitors, locals and a alarge number of British residents. Fresh produce and flowers are sold on the square, whilst artists set upn their stalls in the lanes behind the church.
