The natural harbour is the main focus of Porto Cristo
Literally translated as "The Port of Christ", Porto Cristo is sheltered by rocky headland making the first class beach a sun bather’s paradise!
The natural harbour is the main focus of Porto Cristo, which is located on the east coast of Majorca approximately 40 miles to the east of Palma and the Son Sant Joan International airport. The resort makes a perfect choice for a relaxing holiday in quiet surroundings, with plenty
Porto Cristo is very popular with middle aged couples and the accommodation here is quite modest and low key, which is in keeping with the rest of the town. There is a generous handful of hotels and apartments here but little above the 3 or 4 star standard.
While visiting you should not miss the Aquarium, or The Caves of Drach and the Caves of Hams.
These limestone caves on the edge of Porto Cristo have become one of Mallorca's top tourist sights and are high on the ‘must-see’ list when visiting Mallorca. With almost 2000m (6550ft) of caves and six subterranean lakes, the caves were discovered near Porto Cristo on the east coast in 1896, and today crowds of visitors come for the hour-long multilingual tour - be prepared to queue if you come at a weekend.
The tour begins with a walk along 700m of underground paths, with stalactites and stalagmites all around you, Once inside the caves there is no easy way out so think twice if you are claustrophobic! The climax is a magical concert where classical musicians play from boats on a large underground lake - Lake Martel, Europe’s largest underground lake.
The beautifully illuminated clusters of stalactites and stalagmites are named after things they resemble, though inevitably some labels are more obvious than others.
