One of Mallorca's most appealing towns
Soller, is a town and municipality near the northwest coast of Majorca about half an hour's drive, from Palma Airport, which hosts a week-long international folklore festival every July. Soller is linked by rail, and by a highway with a toll tunnel, to the Majorcan capital of Palma which makes getting there much easier. There are also good connections with tram and bus services.
By far the best way to arrive at Soller is by train. The 17 mile journey from Palma, in a vintage wooden carriage that rattles down the mountainside, is a throwback to an earlier age of travel. Trains run five times a day from Placa d'Espanya in Palma.
The present-day economy is based mainly on tourism, and mainly agriculture based on massive orchards of citrus and olive trees.
Once in Soller, most people stroll around the shops, visit the market and sit in the main square admiring the Modernist architecture. There are also good walks into the countryside through a valley of orange trees and an enjoyable tram ride to the port.
The actual resort of Puerto de Soller is an almost perfect horseshoe bay enclosed by two headlands, which is not too dissimilar from many of the resorts on the north coast of Menorca.
Soller is a low-key resort, busy with day-trippers but reverting to calm at night. It is an excellent base to explore the northwest of the island.
The property is in the old part of Soller and just a few minutes walk from the central square where many bars, restaurants and shops can be found. There is also a fresh food indoor market just off the square that sells a variety of fruit, vegetables, meat and fish, all at very reasonable prices. Here you can also find the taxi rank, buses which take about an hour into Palma, the train which also goes into Palma and the tram that can take you to the Port through the orange and olive groves. The Port is only about five minutes by car or about 15 minutes by tram, and offers a beach, marina, boat trips and many bars and restaurants. If you are looking for something very special, then you have found it!
