Capital of Menorca, Mahon is a great place to explore on foot and discover at leisure.
A good place to start is the Museum of Menorca and the historic churches of Santa Maria and San Francisco. The island is always at its picture postcard best – white washed houses, cobbled streets and narrow alleyways.
The old capital of Ciudadella with its medieval origins and cathedral is the place to visit if you are interested in culture and museums. The small fishing village of Fornells is best known for its church of St Antoni and its defence tower. It is also a good place to savour the local fish and seafood specialities, particularly lobster.
Menorcean food has been influenced by many cultures and is a good example of 'Fusion'cooking, although this is a new word for a time-honoured tradition here. Mayonnaise is also said to have been created here and the most famous tipple is the island’s Xoriguer gin.
