Dylan Thomas's Boathouse

Wales's most famous poet

In this uncommercialised town, the grave of Dylan Thomas, Wales's most famous poet, is marked with a small simple white cross in St Martin's churchyard,up on the hill. Born in Swansea, Thomas's famous works include Under Milk Wood, which was made into the classic 1971 film, filmed in neighbouring Fishguard, starring welsh born Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and Peter O'Toole.

The boathouse, where he lived with his wife, Caitlin and their children, Aeronwy, Llewelyn and Colm from 1949 to 1953, is now a heritage centre. Set in a cliff overlooking the glorious Taf Estuary, since his death in 1953, at the tender age of 39, has become a minature shrine to this popular Welsh poet. His writing shed and home have been retained as he left them, and still hold his papers and manuscripts. You will also find original furnishings, memorabilia, a bookshop, coffe shop, viewing platform and terrace.

This quiet setting is beautiful and it is immediately obvious to visitors why he fell in love with this idyllic location.

The Boat House is open every day throughout the year (with exception to Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day) with seasonal hours that apply through the summer and winter months.
