Beaumaris

An attractive well known historic town

Attractive Georgian and Victorian architecture give Beaumaris the air of a resort on England's southern coast.

Beaumaris is an attractive well known historic town on the Menai Strait and boasts more sights than in its neighbouring towns. Its medieval castle dates back to the reign of Edward I and was built as one of the 'iron ring' of North Wales’s castles by the English monarch Edward I, to stamp his authority on the Welsh but it was never finished. Beaumaris Castleis nonetheless an awesome site, regarded by many as the finest of all the great Edwardian castles in Wales.

The town's Courthouse was built in 1614 and the recently restored 1829 Goal preserves its soundproofed punishment room and a huge treadmill for prisoners. Two public hangings took place here.

Beaumaris is the perfect location for a short or long break. It is also a major centre for yachting and also boasts two golf courses within one mile of the town.

There is a good selection of shops, restaurants and public houses and plans have been approved for the building of a marina just out side the town which will provide berths for approximately 400 boats.

Beaumaris holds an annual Arts Festival which runs for nine days, starting from the Spring Bank Holiday weekend in late May.

The town and sea front of Beaumaris boast wonderful views across the Menai Straits to the mountains of Snowdonia. Within ten minutes drive is the Snowdonia National Park which contains some of the most spectacular scenery in Britain. In good weather, a cruise out around Puffin Island or a wander along the nearby coastline close to Penmon Priory makes a pleasant outing.
There are no trains which will take you in and out of Beaumaris however the bus services is good. There are plenty of places to eat - Ye Olde Bull's Head inn on Castle Street was built in 1617. Accommodation, ranging from camp sites to guest houses is plentiful.

Beaumaris Castle

A perfectly symmetrical castle

This formidable castle was the last of Edward I’s Welsh castles. It is perfectly symmetrical as the design was intended to combine defence and comfort. Known as the most technically perfect medieval castle in Britain, invaders would have to overcome many obstacles before reaching the inner ward.

Begun in 1295, the castle was never actually completed. Regarded as a pinnacle of military architecture at the time, with a concentric defence rather than the traditional keep and bailey, the outer walls contained sixteen towers while the inner walls were 43 feet high and up to 16 towers thick in places.

Now a World Heritage listed site in the hands of CADW, Beaumaris Castle is still virtually surrounded by its original moat.

Open daily the castle is located in Castle Street.
