Fishguard

A popular holiday centre and seaport

This popular holiday centre and seaport is located at the mouth of the River Gwaun in Fishguard Bay. Passengers, mail and freight are carried between Fishguard and Ireland as this is the shortest sea-crossing to Ireland – Fishguard being only 87km from Rosslare. The port of Fishguard is located about a mile from the town centre and is served by both rail and bus connections.

Occupying its own lofty headland on the Pembrokeshire coast, the many easy coastal walks in Fishguard offer stunning sea views and although generally known as a short ‘stopping off’ town, for people heading for ferry travel, Fishguard has much to offer. The town itself is particularly popular in July/August when it plays host to the popular music festival.

Ocean Lab in Goodwick. Fishguard features an exhibition gallery with displays of fossils and is well worth a visit. In the foyer of the Ocean Lab, you will find the tourist information office from where you can obtain information about the history and attractions of the area.

Said to have derived its name from the Vikings, who were frequent visitors to this part of the coast, Fishguard has been host to the filming of several films, including Moby Dick and Under Milkwood.

Main Street winds downwards around the coast towards Lower Fishguard, a cluster of old-fashioned holiday cottages scattered around a thriving pleasure boat port. Views from Lower Fishguard are excellent.
