The small county town of Pembroke is home to one of the most impressive Norman castles in Britain
The old, small county town of Pembroke sits on the southern side of the Pembroke River. The restored castle, reputed to be the birthplace of Henry VII in 1457, is one of the largest and most impressive Norman castles in Britain and is dominated by its vast 75 foot high Norman keep. The intact towers and battlements contain many heavily restored communal rooms, now empty of furniture.
The Museum of the Home is an excellent attraction. This old house is crammed with a collection of ordinary items from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries, ranging from kitchen accessories to children’s games.
The Pembroke River flows in from the Daugleddau to frame the northern side of Pembroke town centre. Running parallel to the southern bank is the long Main Street, stretching from the train station in the east to the mighty walls of the formidable castle.
If you are looking for accommodation in Pembroke, Beech House in Main Street is one of Pembroke’s oldest residences.
