Knighton

Straddling England and Wales, Knighton is home to the Offa's Dyke Centre

Knighton, meaning ‘the town on the dyke’ straddles Offa’s Dyke eighth century border as well as the modern Wales-England divide. So close is the town to the border, that the train station and its accompanying hotel are actually in England!

The Welsh name for the town is Tref-y-Clawdd and it is home to the Offa’s Dyke Centre, from where information can be obtained about the long distance walk along Offa’s Dyke Path, running from Prestatyn to Chepstow. Located about halfway along the route, Knighton is a lively attractive place that is well worth a look around.

Knighton is set on a steep hill, which slopes upwards from St Edward’s Church with its medieval tower, to the summit where a castle once stood.

The main street leads, via the market square, marked by a 19th century clock tower, along The Narrows, a Tudor street with little shops located on sharply climbing streets lined with interesting buildings. Most date from the 17th century but others are older.

The Old House on Broad Street is a medieval ‘cruck’ house – curved timbers form a frame to support the roof), with a hole in the roof instead of a chimney.

Accommodation here is plentiful although mainly geared for the back-packing market. Knighton is also well served for pubs and restaurants.
