The home designed and built by a yacht designer, born in New York City in 1851.
Deep in the heart of Coconut Grove there lies an oasis from the hustle and bustle of 21st century life. The Barnacle Historic State Park offers a view of Biscayne Bay and a view of Old Florida. Commodore Ralph Munroe’s home and boathouse are right out of the 19th century and one can well imagine what life may have been like for him and his family as they made their home in the wilds of South Florida, watching and encouraging its growth.
The Barnacle Historic State Park is the home designed and built by Ralph Middleton Munroe, a yacht designer, born in New York City in 1851. It is the oldest home in Miami-Dade County in its original location. Built in 1891 as a one-story bungalow, the house sits atop a limestone ridge that slopes down to beautiful Biscayne Bay. During the Era of the Bay, 1821 to 1896, when there were no roads to Miami, Ralph Munroe was one of the few pioneers to venture into shallow Biscayne Bay with one of his shoal-draft yachts. He settled here and became an important part of the community. In his home and boathouse are displayed many artifacts representing his life as a yacht designer, wrecker, businessman, one-man-tourism board, family man and community activist.
Florida's grandest residence - a National Historic Landmark
Vizcaya is a National Historic Landmark completed in 1916 as a winter retreat for the millionaire industrialist James Deering. It is also a museum owned by Miami-Dade County and accredited by the American Association of Museums. Vizcaya is open to the public 364 days each year, and you are invited to visit this serene and stunningly beautiful retreat from the bustle of modern Miami.
Today, the extraordinary European-inspired estate includes a house filled with art and furnishings, ten acres of gardens on Biscayne Bay, a hardwood hammock (native forest), and an historic village that we’re restoring for public enjoyment.
Vizcaya’s lush subtropical forest and approach the Main House along a walkway lined with fountains and foliage. The inside of the house is filled with treasures from around the world. Outside, you will enjoy spectacular views of Biscayne Bay and the serene, but thought-provoking, gardens and the statues that inhabit them. Marvel at the gallery of orchids, including huge specimens, in the David A. Klein Orchidarium.
A very unusual conical church
This unusual conical church was erected in 1966 and is a very holy place for Miami's Cuban exiles. The history of the Cuban Catholic Church is depicted in a mural above the alter which faces towards Cuba.
Not the easiest place to find, but take the first turn north of the Mercy Hospital.
