Miracle Mile

At the eastern entrance to the leafy streets and elegant boulevards of Coral Gables

So named because of the walk along one side and down the other being the mile in question!

At the eastern entrance to the leafy streets and elegant boulevards of Coral Gables, Miracle Mile was planned as the heart of the area's business quarter and is still the local residents' preferred shopping district.Prices tend to be high but this means that the street is rarely busy.

The Mile offers visitors superb shopping with unique specialty shops housed in buildings of elegant Mediterranean and Italianate architecture, surrounded by lush landscaping.

There are numerous art galleries, antique stores, boutiques and bookstores as well as a wide choice of restaurants, cafés, coffee shops and delicatessens.

The Colonnade Building was built in 1926 as the sales HQ for his real estate business. Nearby at Salzedo Street and Aragon Avenue, the Old Police and Fire Station Building features a wonderful pair of sculpted firemen.

Coral Gables Merrick House

What began as a 1,500-acre citrus plantation turned into Coral Gables, or "City Beautiful," whose heart is at the boyhood home of its founder, George Merrick. His bungalow, built of local pine and coral rock, proved to be a style well fitted for Miami's tropical climate with steeply pitched, overhanging roofs, and many doors and windows that allowed cross ventilation. Restored to its 1920s appearance, it contains Merrick family furnishings and artwork.

More than a century after George Merrick first came to Florida, Coral Gables remains the "city beautiful" of his dreams -- a dream born of humble beginnings and great hope, nurtured in a simple bungalow.

The lush and lazy tropical feel suggests the inspiration for George's masterpiece: Coral Gables.

Biltmore Hotel

A large Spanish-style structure with a tower modelled after the Giralda tower in Seville, Spain.

The Biltmore Hotel, built in 1925, is a large Spanish-style structure with a tower modelled after the Giralda tower in Seville, Spain.

Constructed on 19.8 acres, the hotel has opulent interiors, courtyards, a country club, winding canals, formal gardens and a golf course.

Built by George Merrick, the developer of Coral Gables, the hotel was intended as a fashionable winter resort for the socially prominent. The Biltmore Hotel helped influence the architectural styles of Coral Gables and Miami with its Mediterranean Revival architecture.

The hotel also contributed in large part to the tourism boom in southern Florida in the opening decades of the twentieth century. After serving as an Army hospital during World War II and later a Veteran's hospital, the Biltmore has been restored to its former glory and is again a functioning hotel
