It started in 1845 as a fishing camp but the town has since grown into what is claimed to be the 'most prolific fishing village' in the United States. Deep-sea fishing is teh big draw, for the numerous fishermen and a steady flow of charter boats buzzes in and out of the harbour.
The waters near Destin are particularly rich in fish because of a 100 foot drop in the continental shelf only 10-miles from the shore. There is a busy calendar of fishing tournaments in destin, the most notable being October's month long Fishing Rodeo.
With its stunning beaches and the clear waters so typical of the Emerald Coast, Destin has also become a very popular seaside resort. There are plenty of opportunities for diving and snorkelling.
