Lake Okeechobee
The second largest freshwater lake in the United States
Covering 750 sq miles, The Big 'O', as it is often called, Lake Okeechobee (pronounced O-Key-Cho-Bee ) is famous for its abundance of fish, particularly largemouth bass, and its excellent boating and fishing facilities. On this the second largest freshwater lake, you can rent a boat on any of the many marinas and admire the variety of birds, such as herons, egrets, and a variety of wintering waterfowl which are abundant along the shore.
Lake Okeechobee is a shallow water body with average depths of about 10 feet and maximum depths less than 20 feet. With a floor of limestone , it holds more than a trillion gallons of water.
The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail opened by United States Forest Service in June of 1993 is located on top of the Herbert Hoover Dike, built in 1928, and is open to hikers and cyclists.
Nearby Clewiston offers the best facilities, with three marinas and a choice of decent motels. If you're not an angler, your time in Florida is better spent elsewhere. The bird life is rich along the shore, but the lake is too big to be scenic.
Pahokee is one of the few places to offer easy lakeside access, and it boasts probably the best sunsets in Florida, along the Gulf Coast.
