Daytona Beach

Brash and boisterous - popular with students who descend on the resort for Spring Break

Its famous beach is one of the few in Florida where cars are allowed on the sands, a hangover from the days when motor enthusiasts raced on the beaches.

Daytona is still a mecca for motorsport fans. The nearby speedway draws huge crowds, especially during the Speedway in February and the Motorcycle Weeks in March and October.

Downtown Daytona known simply as 'Mainland' lies across the Halifax River from the beach. Most of the action though, takes place on the beach, which is lined with a wall of hotels. The old-fashioned Boardwalk is both nostalgic and tacky, with concerts in the bandstand, arcades, go-karts, cotton candy and fast food. The gondala skyride glides above Ocean Pier, while down on the beach itself, jet skis, windsurfers, buggies and beach bicycles can be rented.

Ponce de Leon inlet Lighthouse

The lighthouse guards the entrance to a hazardous inlet at the tip of the Daytona peninsula. Recently restored, the lighthouse tapers skyward for 175 feet, its beacon is visible for 19 miles out to sea, and there are far reaching views from the windswept observation deck reached by a 203 step spiral staircase. One of the former keepers' cottages at its base has been restored to its 1890s appearance, another holds the small Museum of the Sea, ans a third conatins a magnificent 17 feet high Fresnel lens.
